Bristow was the son of John and Margaret Beck Malone of Ashley Park, Belfast. His day of birth is not known as the Campbell College Register lists October 1881 only. The 1st October is entered here for technical reasons.

He entered Campbell College in 1894 and is recorded to have been a member of 262 Masonic Lodge Belfast. His address given by the CWGC at time of death was Fortwilliam Park, Belfast.

He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
