Gilbert was the son of Richard Thomas and Blanche Louise Webb of Rath House, Knock, Belfast. A native of Co. Down, he entered CCB in September 1901 until 1906.

He is buried at Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery, Extension Grave 1.V.Q.5. His inscription reads: "Greater love hath no man than this."
