Tracing the history of John is complex. His entry in the Campbell College Register lists him as a pilot officer in the Royal Flying Corps. Other research suggests he served with 172nd Aero Squadron was a unit of the American Expeditionary Force. This unit trained as an Observation Squadron in England, but never entered combat. Further research is ongoing. John was buried in Ennis, Co. Clare.
