Robert was the husband of Mrs. C. J. Kerr, of "Hillside", Delgany, Co. Wicklow (CWGC).

Robert entered Campbell College in September 1899 and played for the cricket 1st XI in 1907 and rugby 1st XV from 1904 to 1907. Before the First World War, he was a Trinity College Moderator.

Robert served with 7th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. The Campbell Register, however, records that he served with Royal Irish Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 11th July 1918 (confirmed by Commonwealth War Graves Commission) whilst serving with the 11th Battalion the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and is buried at Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval, Somme.
