Geoffrey was the son of Capt. J.W. Martin, Dunmore, Co. Galway, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission giving their address at the time of Geoffery's death as, Longford Terrace, Monkstown, Blackrock.

Geoffrey entered Campbell College in April 1907. On the outbreak of war, he worked for the Western Telegraph Company training for submarine telegraphy but resigned to volunteer. He was commissioned into 3rd Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

His date of death according to the CWGC is 2nd August, not 3rd, as set out on his description.

He is buried at Vermelles British Cemetery, Grave 111.L.8. His grave inscription reads, "Until the day breaks and shadows flee away."
