George Mitchell was born on the 5th of January 1897, the son of the Rev. Robert James Mitchell and Annie Mitchell, of The Rectory, Trillick, Co. Tyrone. Born at Drumsnatt, Monaghan.

He enlisted in the Indian Army, 2nd Lieutenant, attached to 45th "Rattray's" Sikhs. The 45th Rattray's Sikhs were one of four regiments within the 37th Infantry Brigade of the 14th Indian Division, 3rd Indian Army Corps.

George was killed in action during the attempted relief of Kut and is buried at Amara War Cemetery Iraq.
