He was the son of J. E. Calvert of Darkley House, Keady. Herbert entered CCB in 1908. He served with the 9th Battalion RIF, losing his life on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. There is no known grave for Herbert, but he is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial to the missing; Pier and Face 15A.
