Hugh was the youngest son of Robert and Eliza Ann Dunwoody, of 92, Holywood Rd., Strandtown, Belfast. His father was a tea merchant.

Hugh was born on the 26th November 1889 and the brother of OC 678, John Ernest Dunwoody. He attended Belmont National School before arriving at Campbell in September 1902. After Campbell, he attended Queen's University where he joined the QUB OTC were he gained Commission and was sent to the front. He was killed by artillery on Messines Ridge.

The war diary reported that at 2.40 am on 31 July 1916, "2nd Lieutenant Dunwoody went out in front of our wire and was unfortunately killed". He is buried at Ration Farm (La Plus Douve) Belgium, Grave 111.B.3. His inscription reads "Thy will be done."
