James was the son of Philip Johnston of Cooleen, Sydenham Avenue, Belfast. His name is recorded on the NIFC 1914-1918 Memorial, and the Strandtown War Memorial. He was buried in St. Quentin Cabaret Military Cemetery, Belgium, grave 11.B.2. His grave inscription reads "Faith unto Death."
