Joseph was the son of Albert and Emma Lowry, of Bachelors Lodge, Navan County. Meath. He entered Campbell College in January 1914, just a few months before the outbreak of the War.

Joseph became a Second Lieutenant with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment. He is buried at Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont Somme France.
