Lewis was born in 1888, the third of five children to GP Dr William McAfee and Elizabeth Ellen Grant. William was from Ballymoney while Elizabeth was from Scotland. His parents married in late 1883 and must have moved to the Wirral shortly thereafter, as their first son, William, was born in early 1885 in West Kirby, the Wirral.
Lewis attended Calday Grange Grammar School in West Kirby and then Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh, where he represented his school in the rugby XV. He then attended Pembroke College Cambridge to study medicine.
In the project's research into Lewis, there is no mention of his time at CCB. The Campbell College Register states he arrived at the College in February 1904 but left in April, eight weeks or so later. A mystery remains as to why he is not recorded on the CCB memorial. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate.
