Born in 1879, second eldest of three boys who all entered CCB in 1894 (brothers were OC's 32 and 34). They were the sons of William Carson, JP of Craigavad County Down.

Robert was quite the sportsman being part of both the 1st XV rugby team from 1894 to 1896 and the cricket team XI of 1895. Robert was married to Helen B. Carson, of Broadwater, East Malling, Kent.

He is buried in Martinsaart British Cemetery, Grave 1.A.8. His inscription reads "Greater love hath no man than this – St John XV. Verse XIII."
