Sidney was born in 1890, son of the Reverend W. T. Martin (address given as Vixen Tor, Horrabridge, South Devon) and Catherine Martin of College House Green Belfast.

Sidney attended Campbell College from 1903 to 1909 and was a School Prefect. He represented his school in the rugby 1st XV from 1907 to 1909 and the cricket 1st XI 1909. Sidney had another brother who also attended Campbell, Norman Todd Martin (OC 1004) a Lieutenant in the RFA 1916-1922 wining the Military Cross.

Sidney is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Panel 4D and 5B.
