Thomas was born on the 23 June 1890, the son of Thomas and Eileen Jones-Nowlan of 16 Clarinda Park East, Dun Laoghaire County Dublin.

He entered Campbell in 1903 and left in 1907. His military career began at Trinity College Dublin where he underwent training within the Trinity OTC. He then enlisted into the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, later attached to the 1st Battalion. He died of wounds on the 27 May 1917.

Thomas is buried at Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun Pas de Calais France.
