He was the son of F. Carruthers of Maywood, Dundonald. He entered CCB in April, 1908. He is buried in Point-Du-Jour Military Cemetery, Athies Arras, Grave I.6.9. His grave inscription reads 'PROMPT AND FAITHFUL'.
His sister, Staff Nurse Catherine M. Carruthers (Territorial Force Nursing Reserve) was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field.
