William Henry Madden was the son of the very Reverend S.O. Madden, Dean of Cork and Charlotte B. Madden. William was a member of staff at Campbell College from 1912-1918 and before that an Assistant Master at Stafford Grammar School.

William was educated at Llandaff Cathedral School; Repton school and Trinity College Dublin. He was a member of the Campbell College OTC during his time as a member of staff.

William enlisted with the 16th Service (pioneer) Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, 36th (Ulster Division). He served with the BEF in France and Flanders with the 36th Ulster Division from October 1915. He was killed in action in March 1918 at the Second Battle of the Somme, near St Quentin and is buried at Noyon New British Cemetery, Oise France.
