Alfred was the son of the Rev. D.A. Taylor D.D. of 'Eastbourne' Windsor Avenue, North Belfast. He entered CCB in September 1901 where he was in the Rugby 1st XV from 1905 to 1907 and the Cricket 1st XI from 1904 to 1906.
From CCB he went to Edinburgh to study medicine. He was an Irish Rugby International from 1910 to 1912.
Alfred is buried at Ypres Town Cemetery Extension, Grave 111.B.21. His inscription reads "Faithful unto death."
